Bathurst Van Accident Update

A report released by RCMP earlier this year found the van involved in the collision was in poor condition. That report found that the van would not have passed a safety inspection in its pre-collision state due to worn brakes and tires. Another report by Transport Canada found the driver had been awake for 16 hours and was driving in poor weather conditions.

Picton Castle TSB Report

Canada's Transportation Safety Board (TSB) has released the final report of its investigation into the tragedy which claimed the life of Laura Gainey nearly two years ago. (A link to the report is posted on our Network Resources site - simply register for free and log-in.)

The Picton Castle should ditch its foreign flag and put in place industry-leading safety practices, said the family of Laura Gainey in response to a report into her death at sea. 

The 25-year-old daughter of Montreal Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey was lost at sea after being swept off the tall ship. The ship has since improved its safety standards but the victim's family said that more needs to be done.

Reaction - Supervision Paradox

Sitting here reading the Supervision Paradox Whitepaper and enjoying it very much.

I like your idea that the path one took to get to working in outdoor ed conditions how one expects to be supervised. I'd say NOLS stressed the informal path, at least for backpacking staff, and certainly that was the case for me (hiked the Applachian Trail, etc.) So I expected to be supervised informally, with a lot of reliance on my judgement. Never thought that it might be different for others!
